What are Glassworking Safety Glasses?

Glassworking (also called lampworking or torchworking) involves localized heating of glass materials using a torch flame to fabricate complex shapes. When the flame is applied, a small amount of elemental sodium sublimates from the surface of the glass and is burned in the flame. This burning causes an intense bright yellow light called a "sodium flare".

The use of specialized glassworkers safety glasses is essential to filter out the bright sodium flare, enabling the glassworker to see the glass material as it is being worked, and to protect the eyes from other hazards including infrared and ultraviolet radiation, and dust and impact hazards.

An ANSI Shade #3 lens is recommended for most conditions, with Shade #5 preferred for some glass colors and/or higher power torches.
